What Fabric is Suitable to Make this Bear?

We made our Sabine using 7mm feathered mohair. You can also use slightly more furry mohair, or even try a completely different fabric.

Supplies List for the Bear:

  • Fabric – Small pieces of mohair or synthetic fabric
  • Eyes – 4mm or 5mm safety or glass eyes
  • Joints – 13mm mini bear discs with split pins or screws
  • Nose Thread – embroidery thread no 8
  • Paw Pads – a square of suede or velvet

Supplies List for the Pin Cushion and Accessories:

  • A small container such as a metal tin or plastic cup, diameter approximately 5cm
  • Assorted scraps of felt green, brown, dark brown
  • Embroidery thread or sewing thread in matching colours
  • Small buttons, beads and other decorative elements to accessorise the pin cushion

Sewing Tools and General Supplies:

In addition to the items in the supplies list above, you will need fiber fill stuffing, sewing thread, and possibly some glass beads or lead shot to weight the bear.

Have the following tools on hand:

  • Fabric marking pen to mark out the pattern pieces on the fabric
  • Small sharp scissors for cutting out
  • Hand sewing needles
  • A long doll needle to insert the eyes
  • A hemostat or stuffing tool
  • Needle nose pliers for the joints

Hand Sewing or Sewing Machine?

We prefer to sew our bears entirely by hand. You can save time by sewing the seams using a sewing machine. However, you will still need to do some hand-finishing.
