What is Beige Craft Felt?
If you’re on a budget and looking for an inexpensive fabric that is easy to work with, does not fray, comes in many colours, and is suitable for different decorative and sewing projects, Beige craft felt is ideal. The materials used to make felt, as well as the industrial process to manufacture it, means that felt is very affordable. The non-woven fabric is made from acrylic fibres such as polyester, viscose, or rayon and therefore, it is not recommended for items that you will handle a lot or if your project must be washable.
The Many Uses of Craft Felt
Like many materials and tools we’ve adopted for handcrafts, felt was not originally an art supply. Traditionally, people used the fabric to make clothing and household items such as shoes, hats, and rugs. It also has wonderful sound-proofing abilities, and you’ve probably seen it used as padding and to protect surfaces from scratches or heat.
These days, we use felt for everything from school projects to artist-designed soft toys. It is also great to use if you make jewellery or other fashion accessories. If you’re looking for felt craft inspiration, head over to our Felt Patterns section.
Tips for Working with Felt
If you’re new to working with felt, here are a few handy tips to get you started.
- Polyester sewing thread, embroidery floss, or perle cotton are good for sewing felt. Make sure you have a supply of various colours to match your felt, and contrasting colours for adding details. You can use one, two, or three strands of thread, depending on the effect you’re trying to achieve.
- You will need small sharp scissors with a pointy end for cutting the felt.
- Use a felt-tip pen or fabric marker to mark out your cutting lines, or tracing paper if you have it. Cut just inside the line when you cut out the pieces so that you don’t see ink marks on your project.
- Embroidery (crewel) needles are best for hand sewing and make sure to use a new, sharp needle.
- You can use any stitch to sew your project together but blanketstitch and whipstitch are the most common. No-sew methods such as glue are also an option for non-washable felt projects.
How Many Colours of Felt are There and What size is a Square?
You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of colours on our Craft Felt Page. The squares measure approximately 22 x 22cm. Please allow for slight variances due to the width of different fabric rolls and the fact that our squares are cut by hand.
