Zac Teddy Bear Pattern

Zac is a 30cm (12 inches) fully jointed teddy bear. He is made of mohair with glass eyes. The pattern features a few techniques different from traditional teddy bears. There are darts, a bit of needle sculpting around the eyes and paw pads, a tummy inset, and an innovative way to attach ears. This sewing pattern is suitable for intermediate to advanced teddy bear makers.

This modern-style teddy bear is the perfect addition to your handmade toy collection. Zac is small enough to easily sit on a shelf or in a display cabinet but he’s big on character.

PDF Pattern

This is the PDF version of the pattern. A PDF pattern is a great choice because it’s affordable and you don’t have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. Once you have paid for your order, you will receive a link where you can download the pattern sheets and instructions. You can print the pattern on ordinary A4 or Letter sized printer paper. To ensure that your pattern comes out the right size, choose ‘Actual Size’ in your printer settings.

What Fabric is Suitable to Make this Bear?

We made our Zac using 18mm pile feathered mohair. You can also use slightly more furry mohair, or try a fabric with shorter pile to show off his features even more. Although we think that most synthetic fur fabrics wouldn’t do the pattern justice, it would probably work.

Full Supplies List:

• Fabric – 1/8m mohair in main colour and 25cm x 12cm mohair fabric in contrasting colour for the tummy and ears.
• Eyes – 9mm or 10mm black glass eyes
• Joints – 25mm and 30mm discs with split pins or screws
• Nose Thread – black embroidery thread no 8
• Suede – a small piece for the footpads and paw pads

Sewing Tools and General Supplies:

In addition to the Zac teddy bear pattern and the items in the supplies list above, you will need fiber fill stuffing, sewing thread, and possibly some glass beads or lead shot to weight the bear.

Have the following tools on hand:

• Fabric marking pen to mark out the pattern pieces on the fabric
• Small sharp scissors for cutting out
• Hand sewing needles
• A long doll needle to insert the eyes
• A hemostat or stuffing tool
• Needle nose pliers for the joints

Hand Sewing or Sewing Machine?

We prefer to sew our bears entirely by hand. You can save time by sewing the long seams using a sewing machine. However, you will still need to do some hand-finishing.
