Johnny Bear PDF Pattern

Johnny bear is a 25cm (10 inches) traditional style teddy bear. He is made of mohair with glass eyes and movable joints. The Johnny Bear PDF pattern is ideal for beginner teddy bear makers.

This vintage-style bear is the perfect addition to your teddy bear collection. Small enough to easily fit into a shelf or in a display cabinet, he’s big enough to make a statement with his presence. Johnny Bear will look so sweet nestled in amongst his teddy friends. The Johnny Bear sewing pattern is suitable to use with vintage fabrics or upcycled clothing. In fact, many people use this pattern to make memory bears.

PDF Pattern

This is the PDF version of the pattern. A PDF teddy bear pattern is a great choice because it’s affordable and you don’t have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. Once you have paid for your order, you will receive a link where you can download the pattern sheets and instructions. You can print the pattern on ordinary A4 or Letter sized printer paper. To ensure that your pattern comes out the right size, choose ‘Actual Size’ in your printer settings.

What Fabric is Suitable to Make this Bear?

We made our Johnny using feathered mohair with a sparse pile. You can also use slightly more furry mohair, or even synthetic fabric. Vintage cotton fabric would suit the bear, just be sure to use iron-on interfacing to stabilize the fabric.

Full Supplies List:

  • Fabric – 50cm x 35cm (1/8m) feathered mohair
  • Eyes – 8 or 9mm black glass
  • Joints – 25mm discs with split pins or screws
  • Nose Thread – black embroidery thread no 8
  • Paw Pads – a scrap (10 x 22cm) of suede

Sewing Tools and General Supplies:

In addition to the items in the supplies list above, you will need fiber fill stuffing, sewing thread, and possibly some glass beads or lead shot to weight the bear.

Have the following tools on hand:

  • Fabric marking pen to mark out the pattern pieces on the fabric
  • Small sharp scissors for cutting out
  • Hand sewing needles
  • A long doll needle to insert the eyes
  • A hemostat or stuffing tool
  • Needle nose pliers for the joints

Hand Sewing or Sewing Machine?

We prefer to sew our bears entirely by hand. You can save time by sewing the seams using a sewing machine. However, you will still need to do some hand-finishing.
